Mahler's Symphony No. 1
Strictly Classical, Copley New Service, December 4, 2005
MAHLER: Symphony No. 1; "Lieder Bines Fahrenden Gesellen" (Songs of a Wayfarer),
Christopher Maltman, baritone; Philharmonia Orchestra, Benjamin Zander, conductor. Tetarc SACD-60628; 2 CDs; text (Disc No. 2 is a bonus disc.)
I can't remember when I last heard such a thrilling recording of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1. Conductor Benjamin Zander is recording all of the Mahler symphonies on Telarc, and in so doing is making a significant contribution to the Mahler recorded literature. What makes this album especially valuable is Disc No. 2 that is a lecture by the conductor with many examples of the work from the orchestra and at the piano. Soloist Christopher Maltman, orchestra and conductor turn in a splendid reading of "Wayfarer." Idaal for anybody just getting started with Mahler - or for any of us who have known and loved his work for many years. - By King Durkee
